Tuna Fishing Tips

Dorado image

Tuna fishing in Southern California (and beyond) has become a highly specialized game, especially with the recent explosion of giant Bluefin. To be successful in 2026, you need to be prepared for three distinct scenarios: The Night Bite, The Foamer, and The Kite.

1. The Night Bite (The Current "Gold Rush")

Currently, the most consistent way to land "trophy" Bluefin ($150\text{--}300\text{+ lbs}$) is fishing heavy jigs at night .

  • The Gear: You need a "Rail Rod" (a heavy rod designed to be rested on the boat's rail) and a 2-speed reel (like a Penn International or Shimano Tiagra) spooled with 100–130 lb braid.

  • The Lure: Heavy "Knife Jigs" ($200\text{--}500\text{ g}$) like the Nomad Streaker or Mustad Rip Roller .

  • The Technique: Drop your jig to the depth where the captain marks fish on the sonar. Use a "long pump" or a steady medium-speed retrieve through the school. Many bites happen on the sink—if your line stops or "thumps" while dropping, engage the reel and wind fast!

2. Fishing "Foamers" and "Breazers"

When tuna are actively feeding on the surface (creating white "foam"), they are often keyed in on tiny bait like anchovies, making them incredibly frustrated to catch.

  • Stealth: Do not drive the boat into the middle of the school. Slide in parallel or get upwind and drift toward them.

  • Match the Hatch: If they are on small bait, use small, heavy jigs like the Shimano Current Sniper (Coltsniper).

  • The Pause: With poppers (like the Hogy Charter Grade ), try a "pop-pop-pause" cadence. Sometimes letting the lure sit motionless for up to a minute triggers the strike.

3. Kite Fishing (The "Secret Weapon")

Kite fishing is the most effective way to present a bait without the fish seeing your line or being spooked by the boat.

  • The Presentation: A kite suspends a live or artificial flying fish so it skims and splashes on the surface. This creates a massive visual "dinner bell" for big tuna.

  • Distance: It allows you to fish hundreds of yards away from the boat's noise and shadow.

4. Yellowfin vs. Bluefin

While Bluefin are the "stars," Yellowfin are often more cooperative in the summer and fall.

  • Location: Look for clean, blue water and floating kelp paddies .

  • Porpoise Schools: In SoCal, Yellowfin often travel with schools of porpoise . If you see dolphins jumping, there is a high chance tuna are underneath them.

  • The Slide: As the boat slows down near a school, cast a fly-lined sardine (no weight) on a 20–30 lb fluorocarbon leader.

2026 Season Outlook

The 2026 season kicked off early, with the first Bluefin reported in March . Peak action for both species is expected from June through August near hotspots like the 43 Fathom Spot, Tanner Bank, and San Clemente Island.

Shimano Calcutta Series - Best Fishing For Yellowtail

SHIMANO Calcutta Conquest CTCNQ400 Reel - Right-Handed - This is the latest high-end Calcutta. I used to love my 400 though more maintenance than most reels it was worth the big performance in small package for local 3/4 open party fishing for Yellowtail, the most popular trips out of San Diego for Yellowtail.

Shimano CALCUTTA 400B, Round Baitcating Freshwater Fishing Reel - This is more like the older Calcutta 400's that were populare in the 90's. I really liked mine but again maintenance and drags got tempermental. The Conquest if in the angler's budget I highly recommend. When that one trophy Yellow comes to the boat the Conquest is the better reel.
