Halibut Fishing Tips
Halibut (specifically the California Halibut) are master ambush predators. To catch them in 2026, you need to master the "slow and low" approach—keeping your bait moving just inches above the sandy bottom.
1. Finding the "Ambusher"

Transitional Structure: Don't just fish open sand. Look for areas where sand meets rock, kelp, or reef . Halibut sit in the sand at the edges to ambush prey moving in and out of the structure.

The Magic Depth: While they can be found in the surf, 80 feet is often the "magic depth" for consistent keeper-sized fish in Southern California.

Current is Your Friend: Halibut face into the current waiting for bait to be pushed toward them. If the current is weak, use your boat’s motor to bump-troll and mimic a moving tide.
2. Best Rigs and Baits

The Bounce-Ball Rig: This is the gold standard for boat anglers. Use a heavy lead ball that you bounce off the bottom while slow-trolling ($2\text{--}4\text{ knots}$). The noise and "puff" of sand attract the fish, which then see your trailing bait.

The Drop-Shot: Highly effective in bays like San Diego or Long Beach . Use a 3"–4" fluke or minnow on a size 1 or 2 hook, with the weight about 18 inches below.

Live Bait: Anchovies, sardines, and grunion are top choices. Because halibut "short-bite" (grab the tail first), always use a trap rig (stinger hook) to ensure you hook the fish even if it doesn't swallow the whole bait immediately.
3. Essential Pro-Tips

Don't Swing Immediately: If you aren't using a trap rig, give the fish 5–10 seconds to fully inhale the bait before setting the hook. Smaller fish "chew" on the bait, while large ones inhale it in one gulp.

Play Them Light: Halibut have relatively soft mouths and aren't massive fighters. Use light-to-medium tackle ( $12\text{--}15\text{ lb}$ test) so you don't pull the hook out during their trademark headshakes.

Netting Strategy: Always head-net a halibut . If you touch their tail, they will explode into a frantic run and often spit the hook.

SHIMANO Calcutta Conquest CTCNQ400 Reel - Right-Handed - This is the latest high-end Calcutta. I used to love my 400 though more maintenance than most reels it was worth the big performance in small package for local 3/4 open party fishing for Yellowtail, the most popular trips out of San Diego for Yellowtail.
Shimano CALCUTTA 400B, Round Baitcating Freshwater Fishing Reel - This is more like the older Calcutta 400's that were populare in the 90's. I really liked mine but again maintenance and drags got tempermental. The Conquest if in the angler's budget I highly recommend. When that one trophy Yellow comes to the boat the Conquest is the better reel.
